How to Choose a Road Bike: A Complete Guide

By Jose Guzman-Soto · 6 min read

Start With Your Riding Style

Before looking at bikes, be honest about what you'll actually do with it. Road bikes break into a few clear categories:

  • Endurance bikes — relaxed geometry, more upright position, compliance-focused. Great for long rides, centuries, and riders who spend 4+ hours in the saddle. Bianchi Infinito ICR is the benchmark.
  • Race bikes — aggressive geometry, stiff and light, maximized for power transfer. If you're racing or chasing PRs on group rides, this is your category. Bianchi Specialissima.
  • Aero bikes — aerodynamics-focused frames for flat terrain and time trialing. Bianchi Oltre RC.

Frame Material

Carbon fiber is the gold standard for road bikes — light, stiff, and excellent at absorbing road vibration. Most serious road bikes above $2,500 are carbon. Aluminum is heavier but more affordable and surprisingly good — the Bianchi Arcadex Aluminum at $2,350 rides better than many entry-level carbon bikes because the geometry and components are dialed in.

Groupset: The Heart of the Bike

The groupset is your shifters, derailleurs, brakes, and crankset. The major players:

  • Shimano 105 Di2 — best value electronic shifting. Reliable, crisp, and now wireless.
  • Shimano Ultegra Di2 — one step up from 105. Lighter and slightly more refined feel.
  • SRAM Rival AXS / Apex AXS — fully wireless from day one, excellent ergonomics, 1x drivetrain option.
  • Campagnolo Chorus — the Italian option. Legendary feel, unmatched aesthetics.

Fit Matters Most

A $10,000 bike that doesn't fit will be less enjoyable than a $2,500 bike dialed in perfectly. At SOTO Cycles we include a free basic fitting with every new bike purchase — because we've seen too many people buy the right bike and set it up wrong. Come in, ride a few options, and let us help you find your size.

Budget Guidance

  • $1,500–2,500: Good aluminum frames with mechanical groupsets. Excellent for getting started seriously.
  • $2,500–5,000: Entry-level carbon or premium aluminum with electronic shifting. This is where the sweet spot is.
  • $5,000+: Full carbon, high-end electronic groupsets, premium wheels. Race-ready out of the box.
